Judicial elections in Kansas include both partisan elections and retention elections. Judges on the Kansas Supreme Court and Kansas Court of Appeals are subject to retention elections. At the district court level, some judges are elected through retention, while others face partisan elections, depending on the district.

A total of 105 judicial candidates appeared on the general election ballot in Kansas. Of those, 72 judges ran in retention elections. Only one race in the general election was contested.

Interesting races

  • The sole contested judicial race in Kansas' general election resulted in the defeat of Judge Gregory L. Waller of the Eighteenth Judicial District. Public defender Seth L. Rundle won the seat with 53% of the vote. This marked only the second time since his 1993 appointment that Waller faced a contested election.[1]
  • Supreme Court Justices Eric Rosen and Lee Johnson were retained with 52.6% of the vote, securing new terms on the bench.
