Karen B. Freeman is seeking re-election as a school board member in Northside ISD SMD #7. Freeman and her husband have 4 children who began kindergarten at Scobee ES, NISD and graduated from O,Connor HS in NISD. She has held numerous officer/leadership positions in PTA and Booster Clubs for nearly 20 years before running for the Board in 2005 and she is completing her 16th year. Karen served as an officer on the Helotes Chamber Board for six years from its inception. Freeman has a proven commitment to the students, the community, and to Northside ISD school district.

A school board member’s job is critical. Freeman says school board members are responsible for the 3 things the community holds near and dear: their children, their values, and their money. I work with our board and superintendent to ensure that every decision that is made is about what is best for children and that all children have the opportunities they need to succeed no matter what zip code they live in”, says Freeman.

  • Experience matters. I not only serve on my local Northside ISD board but I have also been elected to serve as a director on the Texas Association of School Boards. I work with local trustees as well as trustees across Texas to carry our message of the importance of public education and what our children need to succeed. Public education is at a crossroads in Texas. You don’t have to look any futher than this legislative session and look at proposed legislation that would be detrimental to the education of our children. I have testified at the Texas Capitol and relentlessly network with others to ensure our kids have the opportunities that they need. I continue to make a difference. I am proud that I have earned the Texas PTA Lifetime Me

  • Integrity for the Community. My phone number is listed on our district website and no one is shy about giving me a call. It is important that our board and our district continue to build trust with the community. It takes all of us working together so that our students are successful. I am accountable to my community and the taxpayers. The board oversees NISD’s aggressive debt management plan in which we remarket bonds and balance our fixed rate and variable rate bonds. It is because of this plan the we have saved the taxpayers over 600 million dollars in the last 10 years. Collaboration moves at the speed of trust.
  • I am proud to serve on NISD Board of Trustees and to serve the NISD community. Good governance in NISD has contributed to this district’s success. I seek re-election to help ensure the high quality educational opportunities our families expect and our children deserve.
The area of public policy that I am most passionate about is public education.
I have always looked up to my dad. Dad is first generation American in his family. His parents made their way to Rochester, NY from Italy through Ellis Island to seek a better life and raise a family in the United States. My dad's father, my grandfather that I never met, died when my dad was preschool age. Dad had two brothers and they had to work at an early age to help support their mom. She worked from her home as a seamstress making men's suits. Education was important to my dad and his brothers. They graduated HS with a trade. I grew up knowing how important education is helping to make your way through life.
The first historical even I remember is when John F. Kennedy was shot and killed. I was in second grade and 7 years old.
I worked as a waitress in a coffee shop for my first job and held that position for 5 years as I finished high school and earned money to support myself in college.
The primary job of school board member is to ensure that ALL students have the opportunities available that they need to be successful. It is important for a school board member to be available to the community in which they serve and therefore serve as that link between the community and the school district. School board members represent the public in public education.
