I was raised on farms in central Iowa (Green Mountain, State Center). I attended Iowa State University, majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology. I spent ten years working in the environmental education field. Then I went back to school (Buena Vista University and the University of Northern Iowa) and became a classroom teacher. I have done this for the last twenty years. I spent most of my classroom time teaching middle school science. Most recently, I have been teaching talented and gifted with kindergarten through eighth grade students in Iowa Falls.

In my spare time, I have a large garden/small farm. I deliver produce to my Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) customers, sell at farmers markets, and supply directly from the farm (Koenigs' Acres Farm). I also raise poultry - including chickens, turkeys and sometimes other types of fowl.

I have been married to my best friend, Matt, for nearly thirty years. We have a beautiful daughter, Francesca ("Franki") and a granddaughter, WInry.

My motivation for running is that I want to step up to support the things I believe in - public education, environmental conservation, and sustainable agriculture. I am a union member. I support ethical hunting. I believe rural communities deserve effective representation.

  • I support public education.
  • I believe in environmental conservation.
  • I believe we must make agriculture sustainable.
I am pro-choice when it comes to female health care initiatives.

I believe in the second amendment, however I am concerned about mental health issues that may relate to individual safety.

I support making small, family-owned businesses a priority over large corporations.

I believe our mental health system needs to be improved.

I believe our public school teachers and staff need improved wages and support to meet the current needs of families in our communities.
I believe the characteristics or principles most important for an elected official to have include the ability to listen, the ability to research, and the ability to communicate.
I would like to leave a legacy to my daughter and grandchildren in the form of a memory of a mother/grandmother that never gave up. I have my share of challenges and life wasn't easy, but I continued. I worked hard and made the best with what I had.

If I went fishing, I left that place cleaner than it was when I got there. If I went for a walk, I picked up the litter along the way. If we met an injured animal, we found a way to help it.
My very first job was as a babysitter for our neighbor's infant daughter. I was ten years old, watching a four month old infant, making 50 cents an hour. I watched Kristin frequently for several years, until we moved to State Center. However, I continued babysitting into my twenties - even while I was in college, when I babysat Megan, a special needs youngster.
Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain. I loved the book - it was one long adventure. I wanted to run away and live in a tree, too!
I believe that there are enough experienced politicians in the state from which those of us who are not experienced can learn. It might be beneficial, but not all good legislators have had experience in government or politics. I believe someone who cares about other and has some common sense may do an equally admirable job.
I do believe that it is important to build relationships with other legislators. Being able to discuss ideas, disagree tactfully, and explain differing and agreeing points of view help both parties better understand others' points of view.
I would be very interested in being involved in an education committee because of my traditional and non-traditional teaching experiences.
