Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated California's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. California's U.S. Senate seat was open following the retirement of incumbent Barbara Boxer (D). Thirty-four candidates filed to run to replace Boxer, including seven Democrats, 12 Republicans, and 15 third-party candidates. Two Democrats, Kamala Harris and Loretta Sanchez, defeated the other 32 candidates to advance to the general election. Harris won the general election.[2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Roseberry's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Economy: In respect to the economy, the primary involvement by the government concerns budgetary spending, legislation enacted that affects jobs, and taxes. In all three of these areas, politicians currently in elected office have been doing a pitiful job. Now is the time to take action to save the future. It is time to require accountable and responsible financial policies from our representatives.
  • Security/Foreign Policy: America’s first and primary responsibility in any foreign policy decision is to ensure the safety of American citizens, both within the United States and abroad. In recent years, this most fundamental principle has not been upheld. Poorly crafted foreign policy decisions, lack of clarity regarding the goals and objectives sought for each region, and actions based on inaccurate, completely naïve, and unrealistic conclusions reached about other country’s intentions, that have clearly stated intentions to the contrary, have resulted in a drastically unstable international arena, in desperate need for the United States to regain its leadership role.
  • Values: In every election numerous issues arise in need of solutions. Most informed voters will prioritize the issues and select the candidate whose proposed solutions reflect their own stance and whose prioritization of the issues align with what is most important to them. What is often missed in that assessment process is to recognize that central to each of these individual issues there is really a far deeper and more encompassing matter; a matter in much greater need of attention by voters, and that is the values underlying the proposed solutions.
  • Education: The education of the youth of America is a subject of profound importance to Karen. As an educator in a variety of schools for more than seven years, Karen has seen first hand the great need for changes and reforms regarding the government’s involvement in education. At the core of the needed reform is to understand that our government is a government of the people, and the government of the future is dependent on the education of the youth of today.
  • Immigration: The immigration issue has three primary components which must be addressed if any proposed policy is to effectively work and bring the sought after reforms- the violation of the rule of law, the effect on the economy, and the threat to national security. The immigration policy so often put forward by politicians concentrates only on the economic issues, with occasional lip-service paid to national security, but seldom if ever, really focuses on the violation of the rule of law, which is to ignore the most important aspect- the value from which the other two issues actually stem.
