Karen Trujillo
Karen Trujillo is the former New Mexico secretary of education. She was appointed to the position by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) on January 24, 2019. Her tenure ended on July 29, 2019, when Grisham terminated her employment.[1][2]
Trujillo died on February 25, 2021, after being struck by a vehicle.[3]
Biography
Trujillo worked as a teacher for 10 years and in professional development for 20 years. At the time of her appointment, she was the interim associate dean for research at the New Mexico State University College of Education. She was also the research director for the college’s Alliance for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.[1]
Trujillo also was a member of the Doña Ana County Commission, representing District 5. She was elected to the office in 2018 and took office in January 2019. She resigned her seat after her appointment as education secretary.[4]

About the office
The New Mexico Secretary of Education is an appointed state executive position in the New Mexico state government. The secretary serves as head of the state Public Education Department. In that role, the secretary is responsible for overseeing New Mexico's education policy and program development, operational management of the department, and the distribution of educational funding.[5]
The secretary of education position was created in 2003, when the state's voters approved Ballot Question 1.[6]
