Biography

Kari Chesney earned a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in 2007 and a D.V.M. from the University of Missouri in 2015. She is pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. Chesney's career experience includes working as a veterinarian.[1]

Kari L. Chesney is a veterinarian and PhD candidate at the University of Missouri specializing in comparative medicine. Dr. Chesney has been a committee member for the City of Columbia Public Transit commission and City of Columbia/Boone county joint Energy and Environment commission. She has held executive board positions for the Graduate Professional Council as National and State Affairs Director (2018-2020) managing advocacy for public education in Jefferson City and Washington D.C.
  • As a scientist and doctor, I will bring evidence-based progress to Mid-Missouri.
  • As a working Missourian, I will fight for workers' rights, unions, and prevailing wage.
  • As a veterinarian, I will fight for our rural communities and healthy, sustainable family farming practices.
My four major policy platform pieces include healthcare, public education, agriculture, and workers rights. I will work to pass Medicaid expansion to support our rural hospitals and clinics. I will support our farmer's rights to local control of their land and communities. I will fight alongside workers for their rights to collectively bargain, maintain prevailing wages, and support safe work conditions. I will work to make our public schools the best in the country and oppose school vouchers, which would devastate our rural and inner-city communities.
I believe it is beneficial for state legislators to understand the political process, but I do not believe it is necessary to have previous experience in government or politics. I have achieved certification in Science and Public Policy from the Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri which will benefit me greatly in my office. I believe the most important aspect to being a state legislator is to meet with and listen to your constituents, even those that do not agree with you.
One of Missouri's biggest challenges over the next decade will be to support our rural communities. That means providing healthcare by expanding Medicaid. That means providing broadband access to push our rural communities into the 21st century and give farmers the tools to upgrade and support their farming practices. That means investing in our infrastructure, which has been left to waste away for too long. I want to see our main streets vibrant again and our small towns thriving. It starts with a pledge from our legislators to make sure that becomes a priority, and I will gladly take that pledge.
I do not plan on making politics my career. I am quite happy as a veterinarian and scientist. The reason I am running for office this year is very specific to the circumstances in which we find ourselves. There is a serious need for more data and science-driven policy in our state to better the lives of Missourians. I want to serve the constituents of District 50 for as long as they will have me, and, if those constituents would like me to continue my political career, I will decide at a later date.
