Campaign themes

2017

Reynolds highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:

Student Achievement and Growth

Academy District 20 continues to be one of the highest performing districts in Colorado according to accountability indicators that measure student achievement, growth, and postsecondary and workforce readiness. Nevertheless, maintaining and improving student achievement and growth in a high performing district must always be a priority; status quo is not good enough for our students. Therefore, we must continue to deliver a guaranteed and viable curriculum that prepares our students for a competitive international market. It is crucial that Academy District 20 continue to maintain a highly qualified, dedicated staff that is supported with relevant and meaningful professional development, resources, and a sound evaluation system.

Student Safety

This is a time of uncertainty and complexities that impact our children as well as the adults who serve them. Social media, bullying, pressures to succeed, fear of failure, and other social issues can leave our children feeling uncertain about who they are and about how to respond to the many challenges they experience. It is imperative that we keep students' social emotional needs at the forefront of our efforts to ensure that students are ready to learn and engaged in their educations. In partnership with parents and other community resources, we must embrace the physical and emotional needs of our students by keeping our schools safe places for learning and growing.

Finance/ Funding

We are blessed with both a growing population in the Academy District 20 community, and with a financially stable district. Unfortunately, the state education budget leaves school districts here and across the state in a resource scarce environment. Millions of dollars have been cut from Academy District 20 over the last 5 - 10 years, and there is little good news that this will change in the near future. Until funding is increased, the Board of Education, the superintendent, and all stakeholders must work together to remain focused on the highest possible student achievement with the resources available. The community's 2016 approval of a bond initiative speaks to the value that this community places on education, and it speaks to the trust that it has in district leadership. Leadership must honor this diligence about the appropriation of funds that promises financial sustainability, accountability, and transparency.

Changing Educational Landscape

Over time, educational systems and the communities they serve have experienced changing social, economic, and political landscapes; educators have increasingly been called upon to serve children and communities in myriad ways. We must continue to rise to the challenge and remain diligent as legislators and policy makers write laws and policy that impact the operation of districts and schools across the nation and state. While we meet legal mandates, we must continue to focus on our community's values and aspirations for the children we serve. We do this with sound policy governance, transparent dialogue, and proactive, long-term planning that keeps what's most important, our children, at the forefront of all decision making.[6]
