Campaign website

Lopez Owens' campaign website stated the following:

Priorities

Reverse Low Voter Turnout

I am on a mission to INCREASE Marion County's historic low voter turnout using every tool available.

Accessibility

I am enthusiastic about public service, and I want to make sure that every resident can access local government services, resources, and the ballot box.

Transparency and Accountability

I am prepared to meet this moment with courage and honesty. Together, we can rebuild trust in local government through transparency and accountability.

Empowering Communities - Inclusiveness

We should be expanding the reach of the Clerk's Office, with the assistance of community partners, so we elevate and include all voices. We should be building spaces that reflect our communities.

Expand all | Collapse all

I'm Karla Lopez Owens and I’m seeking to represent the people of District 46 at the Indiana State Senate. I am a Latina, a progressive Democrat, an attorney, and a community volunteer. Our campaign is focused on anti-corruption, accountability and accessibility to the Democratic process. I am fighting to bring meaningful representation for ALL working class people and immigrant Hoosiers at the State house.

We need leaders who are not afraid to tell the truth. I am not a politician, I am a resident of the district who believes in the power of our community to advocate for the change we need.

I grew up in poverty and come from a working-class, immigrant family who has lived in Indianapolis for 20+ years. My introduction to public service began interpreting for family and neighbors and helping people navigate complex bureaucratic systems. I’ve dedicated the last 12 years of my life to serving the public, working with nonprofits, governmental entities (Republican and Democrat) and private entities. Through this work, I have advocated and fought for progressive causes like immigration reform, living wages, and voter empowerment. I was serving the public 10 years ago and I'll be serving the public 10 years from now.

  • Representation-District 46 is a diverse area and we need representation that reflects the diversity of this district. The Black and Latino population has grown in Marion County yet, Latino people have no leadership in elected offices in Indianapolis. I care about representation because I care about growing the Indiana Democratic Party. In order to make progress, we need new voices, a new way of thinking and a new approach. The old way of thinking will not garner interest or engage new voters.
  • Affordability-Our community cannot thrive without affordable housing, childcare, college and healthcare. Too many families are currently living paycheck to paycheck, spending far too much on basic needs. No full-time worker should be in poverty in the United States. I will work to ensure our community has a chance at economic security and enhance opportunities to improve their standard of living. This includes fighting for housing as a human right, and fighting for full access to public education and public health care.
  • Accessibility-Without full public participation, we cannot have a truly democratic society. I will work to make voting easy and straightforward, I will continue engaging with underrepresented communities to ensure their voices are included in all decision making. I will fight against voter suppression and fight against gerrymandering. My constituents will have direct access to me so their needs and desires can be represented in the statehouse.
Living Wage

One of the main issues I’d focus on is raising the minimum wage. I grew up in poverty, seeing my mom clean bathrooms her whole life. This gave me a deep understanding of the issues poor people face in America; hunger and an inability to pay bills are not abstract concepts to me. Using my experience and training in the creation of laws, I'd fight to raise the minimum wage and give working class Americans a meaningful opportunity to improve their quality of life.

Affordable Housing

We are facing a housing crisis and the core of the issue is that people can’t afford housing. Indiana is one of the worst when it comes to renter’s rights and the pandemic has made the issue worse.

Our eviction process is fast, cheap and easy. As experts have noted, we make evictions a first resort instead of a last resort. I will fight to ensure the rights of tenants facing evictions are not violated by investing in resources like access to legal counsel in their process.

Job Creation and Accessible Laws

Empowering business owners is something I’m passionate about. I want to create laws that protect the interest of small business owners and not hurt them. I’ll focus on removing the barriers of access to financial assistance that are shutting out small business owners who either don’t have the capacity or time to navigate the complexities of some of these applications.
