|When the first effects of Covid-19 befell the state, Kate quickly pivoted the board online, maintaining communication and increasing transparency with the townspeople. Subsequently, as a community organizer, Kate worked with a network of community leaders, including church pastors, emergency management personnel and food shelf managers throughout Orange County to ensure that resources, both state and local, were known and made available to the community. Kate has the unique ability to weave people, opportunity and resources together in a cohesive and productive manner. She has shown such leadership at the local level and is ready to bring this dedication, care, and unifying ability to Montpelier.
- The last six months have been a heavy burden for all Vermonters to bear. Covid has changed every aspect of life and business and it's unclear when the waves of these disruptions will settle. From food insecurity to job loss to an unacceptable gap in broadband, the people, the farms, and the small businesses that make up our rural economy urgently need improved access to essential resources. Now is the time to bridge the gap between people and state government by creating transparent support systems that will enable everyone in our community to thrive.
- Education is the most important investment we can make for the future of Vermont. However, the practice of paying for it with property taxes has been a difficult lift for many Vermonters. The practice creates inequity as wealthy towns have better and better schools, which drive up property values, furthering the divide. As your representative I would support a transition to income-based taxation for education and larger state contribution to the public schools, universal pre-k, trade schools and community college system.
- Our farms and the hardworking families that tend them are the heart of Vermont's identity, and the future of our food system. Yet, we are seeing these farms shutter at an unsettling pace. As a farmer I know the future of Vermont is inextricably tied to the future of its agriculture. As your representative I will insist on the inclusion of farmers in the legislative process to create innovative solutions and support to make ag in Vermont viable for generations to come. By investing in our agricultural economy, we create jobs, mitigate climate change, conserve land, and increase food security across the state.
Public pre-k-16 education.
