Candidate Connection

Kate Michaels completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Michaels' responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

To prevent inequitable downshifting of taxes onto Newton taxpayers and end this vicious cycle, thus protecting our property values, schools, and stabilizing property taxes so people can afford to stay in Newton and thrive. Included in this is the need to deal with NH budget's structural deficit. We can't have the programs we need if we don't have the funding. We can't keep the people we need if we inequitably raise property taxes on those who can least afford it. We have to balance the budget and come up with innovative solutions to maximize income in the general fund. General health and wellness of the community members- this is a lens through which I regard many issues. This includes the opioid epidemic, families health and well being (supporting family leave act), dealing with the fact that NH has the highest rate of pediatric cancer in the Nation-(as well as breast and bladder in adults). From this we see the crucial importance of advocating to ensure our natural resources are safe- our water, environment, so we are safe. I am appalled by corruption and conflict of interest in government and want transparency in Concord, including an audit of the Sec. of State, as well as supporting & developing measures to ensure the public integrity, end corruption and the purchase of our democracy by "special interest groups" and out of state super pacs ("big money"). The only special interest group I care about is YOU, the people of Newton and NH. Time for a government "of the people and for the people" again.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

As a clinical social worker, there are many public policy issues I feel passionately about. This includes our children's well being and education-it is in all our enlightened self-interests to understand the importance of education- including early development and interventions that pave the way for success on every level down the road (and ultimately save money). In addition, we need to keep families in NH and encourage new families to come given our aging population and rate of young people leaving the state. This is an issues which, when addressed properly will be win-win for everyone. In addition, one of my areas of expertise as a therapist, was in addiction, trauma and mental illness. We must continue to find innovative solutions to help those suffering from addiction , as well as preventing future generations from this terrible burden- and there are low-cost early interventions with good records that can be implemented.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, Caring, Intelligence, Flexibility, Innovation, Being able to research issues deeply, Availability, Hard Work, and most importantly being there to serve YOU, not themselves or just a small group. If elected I will support all my constituents because when we work together we can do wonderful things.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Integrity, Expertise (from clinical social work career- including being skilled in conflict resolution and mediation), Caring, Fiscal Responsibility (always asking "how much does this cost and who is paying for it?"), Availability, Innovation, Ability to work together with others, across the aisle, intelligence, open-minded (all voices matter).

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Integrity, Keeping an open line of communication with the town (this is collaborative in some sense b/c I am representing Newton),

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would love to make NH & Newton thrive, and be a part of making NH a beacon as we move into the future, in a sometimes overwhelming world, of what a great state gov't can look like when we work together to serve the PEOPLE we represent. When this happens, we can achieve great things. I've seen incredible healing happen in my years working with individuals and groups to empower them to be the best they can be- and I know we can do this here in the NH State House.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The earlielst event I remember was watching the moon walk :-) on TV in 1969 (Apollo 11)- I was 4 years old.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was working for ABC's TV show "The American Sportsman". I worked there over the summer when I was either 15 or 16 years old. It was an amazing experience!
