Kate is the mother of two teenage children and a lifelong resident of Montgomery County. She is a small business owner and built a practice serving the Montgomery and Howard County communities as a licensed and nationally certified acupuncturist since earning her master’s degree from the Maryland University of Integrative Health in 2003. Volunteered as an acupuncturist in CHI addiction recovery center located in inner city Baltimore. She is a graduate of Loyola College of Maryland. In 2007, Kate was credentialed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, collaborated on a study of the use of acupuncture for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in active-duty soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This collaboration resulted in the 2014 publication “Randomized Effectiveness Trial of a Brief Course of Acupuncture for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder” in Medical Care. Prior to entering the acupuncture profession Kate received several Intramural Trainee Awards for conducting research in cell and molecular biology at the National Institute for Mental Health and the National Cancer Institute.
  • We need to focus on improving reading and math proficiency rates in Maryland K-12 schools. For the past ten years proficiency rates in reading and math have been on the decline in Maryland public schools. This past fall only 15% of the state’s public-school students in grades 3 through 12 were proficient in math, 31% were proficient in English. It is well established that learning higher math is the best way to develop thinking skills in general. Instead of leveraging education resources to improve math and reading skills Maryland law makers put forward no fewer than three pieces of legislation aimed at politicizing history and health curriculums in Maryland schools. Indoctrinating children should not be part of Maryland public education. W
  • Increasing vocational training opportunities in Maryland high schools would enable more of our children to become self-sufficient adults. Local businesses find it difficult to hire reliable workers competent in construction trades such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. Expanding vocational training opportunities in Maryland public high schools would provide more students the means to support themselves through the knowledge and skills needed in the workforce. The State could attract businesses to partner in this endeavor by creating a friendlier business environment.
  • Safer neighborhoods, the opportunity to get a good education, and expanding work opportunities are all places where the state legislature can help address the needs of people in Maryland. Education is a bridge out of poverty, and we need to make it possible for children to safely attend school and acquire the knowledge they need to participate in the workforce.
Montgomery County is a diverse and vibrant community. It’s proximity to the Nation’s Capital and the presence of institutions such as the National Institutes of Health make Montgomery County a magnet for some of the best and brightest minds from around the globe. This constant influx of new people and ideas makes Montgomery County a rich and exciting place to live and raise a family. As a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, I am concerned that Montgomery County is losing it’s edge. It's schools are no longer the best in the state, businesses are choosing to locate or relocate to other nearby counties, and many people no longer feel safe in their neighborhoods. Our county and our state have been dominated by one party for a long time and recently have been experiencing the extremes that this sort of imbalanced governance brings. I think many of us would like to have more moderate voices in our local government. As your delegate in the Maryland General Assembly, I would listen to you concerns and work hard to give moderate perspectives a voice.
