Candidate Connection

Katherine Chipps participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 6, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Katherine Chipps's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Quality and affordable healthcare

2) Safety in our communities
3) Quality education for every student no matter where they live[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about voting rights, access to healthcare, community safety, and education. I believe that everyone has a right to healthcare, and we should make access more affordable to all Ohio. We need to ensure the safety of our communities, whether it be to help stop gun violence, fight the opioid epidemic, or crimes that lead to drug use. I think we need to ensure that all of our children receive an education that prepares them for a successful future. Right now we have a legislature that has been cutting funds to public education and supporting for-profit charter schools that have little to no accountability to the public. No one should profit off of our children's education besides our children.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Katherine Chipps answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I have always looked up to Eleanor Roosevelt. She always fought for what she thought was right - from workers' rights to civil rights she was a leader for her entire life.[5]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
My favorite book is "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. It gives many lessons on race and life that one should carry with them.[5]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I think the most important characteristic is the ability to listen and have a conversation on the issues. You will never agree with everyone 100% of the time, but you can learn more from listening to experiences and opinions of others.[5]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am willing to sit and discuss issues even when I do not agree. I can work with someone that I disagree with to come to the best solution for the problem that has been presented.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Representing their constituents.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave the world a better place.[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Not sure. I remember John Lennon being killed. I was almost 3 at the time.[5]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked for a place called Shirt World and I was there almost 3 years.[5]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
July 4th. It is also my birthday.[5]
What is your favorite book? Why?
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee[5]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
No sure[5]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My two rescue dogs.[5]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Let It Be by the Beatles[5]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
It can be helpful, but I do not believe that it is necessary.[5]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Improving our infrastructure[5]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
I believe it is ideal for the Governor and State Legislature to work together.[5]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, working with other legislators you can learn how a particular bill may affect their constituents. While many pieces of legislation have good intentions behind them, Ohio is so diverse that it will not always work in every part of the state.[5]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor a process that is fair, keeps communities together, and allows the voters to pick their constituents instead of legislators picking their voters.[5]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I would like to be a part of State and Local Government.[5]
If you are not currently a member of your party's leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I don't know. I don't think I would in my first term in office.[5]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No[5]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you've heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
When I ran in 2004 I met a man that was HIV positive. He had said that he had a choice of working so he could have health insurance and live a little longer or stop working and lose his health insurance and die sooner. We talked for about 30 minutes about the struggle, and how much he hated to have to make that decision. I lost that race, but speaking with him I knew that I needed to stay in public service and keep fighting for people like him.[5]
