School board candidates in Michigan were required to file pre-election campaign finance reports with their county election offices by October 28, 2016. Post-election reports were due by December 8, 2016.[3]

In Michigan, candidates are prohibited from receiving contributions from corporations or labor organizations. Within 10 days of becoming a candidate, candidates must form a candidate committee. Following the creation of the committee, candidates have an additional 10 days to register the committee with the school district filing official by filing a statement of organization. A candidate committee that does not expect to receive or spend more than $1,000 during the election cycle is eligible to receive a reporting waiver, which allows that committee not to file pre-election, post-election, and annual campaign statements.[4]

October 28 filing

Candidates received a total of $17,155.54 and spent a total of $11,167.36 as of October 30, 2016, according to the Kent County Clerk.[5]

Lewis provided the following responses for the voter guide compiled by MLive.com:

Why are you running for office?
I am running for the school board to support the vision for GRPS set forth by Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal. As a former educator, I believe that I have an idea how a school needs to be run. My experience as a volunteer at Aberdeen has shown me the quality of education my granddaughters are receiving, and I want that to continue and expand to all the schools in our district. I am so impressed with what is happening in our schools and the efforts that are being made to make Grand Rapids Schools the school of choice in our community.

What are your top three priorities?
I want to support the vision that the superintendent and the board have developed. I am very impressed by the work that is being done by the teachers and administration to provide the best educational opportunities for our students. I want Grand Rapids Public Schools to continue the effort to have the children in our district attend our schools rather than turn to other options because parents mistakenly believe that other districts offer a better option. I want to work with our state government to increase funding for schools and to reform some of the testing that is constantly required of our students.

What is the most pressing issue for this office?
The Grand Rapids School Board must continue to impress upon the community the changes and improvements that are being made to make this district one of the best in the state. Too many people base their opinions of our schools on the past rather than what is actually happening in our schools today. As with most city schools, we do face some issue that are more prevalent in metropolitan schools. But these challenges have not and must not be ignored. We must continue to provide programs for children who are economically and socially challenged and have programs in place to accommodate all students. I believe the we must expand our pre school education so that all students will have the skills they need to be successful when they start Kindergarten.[1][6]
