Katherine Leonard is a judge on the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals. She was nominated to the court by former Republican Governor Linda Lingle in November 2007 and was confirmed unanimously by the Hawaii State Senate.[1] Leonard assumed office on January 30, 2008, for a ten-year term.[2] She was reappointed in 2018 for a second ten-year term.[3]

Education

Leonard received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and her J.D. from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii.[2][4]

Career

After law school, Leonard served as a law clerk for Justice Robert J. Klein. She then joined the law firm of Carlsmith Ball LLP in 1992, where she handled complex commercial, financial, real estate, environmental, trust and business law litigation, and dispute resolution until her appointment to the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals in 2008. Leonard was a founding Board Member of the Hawai`i Chapter of the American Judicature Society.[2]

State Supreme Court nomination

Governor Linda Lingle nominated Leonard to serve as chief justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court on July 22, 2010.[1]

On August 5, 2010, the Hawaii Senate Committee on Judiciary and Government Operations voted 4 to 1 to not recommend Leonard for approval by the full Hawaii Senate.[5]

On August 6, 2010, the full Hawaii Senate voted 14 to 8 not to confirm Leonard as chief justice.[6]

All eight female senators, including Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, Senate Vice President Donna Mercado Kim, and Senators Suzanne Chun Oakland, Roz Baker, Jill Tokuda, Carol Fukunaga, and Michelle Kidani, voted against her. They were all Democrats.

Leonard had received strong support from the Hawaii Women Lawyers group and the Hawaii Democratic Party.[7]
