The city of Austin held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was August 18, 2014. Because of redistricting and term limits, there was no incumbent for District 9.[2] The candidates were Erin K. McGann, Chris Riley and Kathie Tovo.[3] Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the general election, the top two vote-getters - Tovo and Riley - were scheduled to meet in a runoff election on December 16, 2014. On November 7, 2014, however, Riley withdrew from the race, leaving Tovo unchallenged for the District 9 seat.[4][5]

On her campaign website, Tovo highlighted the following issues:[6]

Affordability

  • Excerpt: "Kathie Tovo believes that Austinites of all income levels should be able to live and thrive in District 9 and in every Austin neighborhood. She truly understands the burdens placed on Austin’s families and is not afraid to tackle the large-scale, systemic issues that drive our rising housing costs and other costs of living. She has worked hard to keep expenses in check and will continue to take the lead in making Austin more affordable for everyone."

Environment

  • Excerpt: "Austin’s natural environment is one of its strongest assets and has helped define the city’s unique culture. Kathie has served as a staunch champion for environmental issues and will continue to do so as the representative of District 9."
