Kathleen Birrane
Kathleen Birrane was the Maryland Commissioner of Insurance. Birrane assumed office on May 18, 2020. Birrane left office on June 30, 2024.
Gov. Larry Hogan (R) appointed Birrane on May 1, 2020, to replace Alfred Redmer after Redmer was appointed to direct the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund.[1] Birrane assumed office on May 18, 2020.[2][3]
Biography
Birrane is an attorney by trade and was working as a partner in the Insurance Sector and Litigation and Regulatory Practice Group at the law firm DLA Piper LLP when she was appointed to office. She previously served as principal counsel to the Maryland Insurance Administration from 2002 to 2007. Birrane has also held the positions of senior vice president and general counsel at various hedge fund companies specializing in insurance-related investments. She earned a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University and a J.D. degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.[4]
