Kathleen Dobrozsi Romans is a Judicial Division judge on the Butler County Court of Common Pleas in Hamilton, Ohio. She was appointed to the court by then-Gov. Ted Strickland (D) in September 2008 and was elected to the court in November of 2008 to the remainder of an unexpired term.[1] She was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.[2][3]

Prior to being appointed as judge, Romans served as magistrate of the court's juvenile division from 2003 to 2008.[3]

Romans received both her B.S. in elementary education in 1973 and her M.A. in education administration in 1975 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She received her J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1983 and was admitted to the Ohio Bar the same year.[3]

Romans began her legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Butler County Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division from 1983 to 2001. She became a supervising assistant prosecuting attorney in 1985.[3]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[4]

The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[4]

  • a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
  • at least six years practiced in law; and
  • under the age of 70.

Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.

Romans ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. She defeated Terri King in the general election, winning 52.66% of the vote.[2]
