I'm a longtime Somerville resident, a queer parent of two kids in Somerville's public schools, an active volunteer in the community, and a lifelong Democrat and progressive activist with a decade of experience on Beacon Hill. I've served as Chief of Staff for two Democratic State Representatives and have worked to advance policies from preventing gun violence to addressing racial inequities in maternal health to lifting children out of poverty. I believe that elected officials have a responsibility to not only work towards systemic change but also to meet people's immediate needs.
  • I'll show up for vote and committee hearings, collaborate with other legislators, and deliver results for Somerville and for Massachusetts.
  • I'll advocate for public access and participation in government, working to restructure the committee and stipend system at the heart of legislative inaction in Massachusetts.
  • I'll push for progressive policies in the State House and take advantage of every opportunity to move them forward.
Housing affordability and access, safe and reliable transportation, and healthcare for everyone when and where they need it.
I love the works of bell hooks and Audre Lorde; for more recent examples, I would recommend Matthew Desmond's books.
I believe that humility, perseverance, and curiosity are the most important characteristics for an elected official. In addition, I believe that elected officials should be honest about their priorities, accomplishments, and setbacks.
Someone elected to this office should be a public servant, first and foremost. That means fighting for the district, being accountable to its residents, and taking advantage of every opportunity to move policies forward.
All of my first jobs were babysitting jobs, which I gained after taking a Red Cross certification course in middle school.
I believe that the governor and state legislature should be partners, but the legislature has to be willing to hold the governor accountable and push back when its commitments and priorities aren't being met.
Housing access and affordability, the climate emergency, and health equity. Each of these issues is deeply connected to the other and we need to address them systematically.
I think it's incredibly beneficial for legislators to have previous experience in government. Government work is full of jargon, it's opaque, and it's dependent on context and built on relationships and trust. None of that is ideal, but it does mean that those who have experience and insight in government have a strong advantage.
It is absolutely necessary to build relationships with other legislators. No matter how good your bill or amendment is, it's not going anywhere without the support of your colleagues.
I've had the incredible opportunity to work for two legislators who were role models to me, Alice Wolf and Marjorie Decker. While I'm a very different person with different priorities and strengths, I will always value what I learned from them.
There was an unhoused resident during my first years in the State House who refused to cooperate with the process we needed to confirm his identity so he could access the shelter system. His was one of the only constituent cases that I couldn't resolve and, in addition to breaking my heart, it has fueled my anti-homelessness work since then.
The legislature should oversee the use of emergency powers in instances like a public health emergency.
There is a lot of unfinished legislative business that I plan to move forward. In addition, I hope to restructure the legislative committee system so that committee members elect their own chairs and that stipends are not decided by the leadership.
Transportation, Public Health, Education, and Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy interest me the most, but I'm excited to engage with all committee work.
The more transparency and accountability, the better. Too many voters have given up on government because they don't believe that elected officials are working for the public good.
