Kathleen Ryan is a judge of the Oakland County Probate Court in Michigan. She was elected to this position on November 2, 2010, and took office in January 2011. She ran for re-election in 2016.[1]

Ryan received her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and her J.D. from the University of Detroit Law School.[2]

Michigan held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 2, 2016. The candidate filing deadline for incumbents was March 21, and the deadline for non-incumbents was April 19.[3] Incumbent Kathleen Ryan ran unopposed in the Oakland County Probate Court general election (incumbent).[1]

Ryan defeated Dana M. Hathaway with 52.79 percent of the vote in the general election on November 2, 2010.[4]

Judges of the Michigan Probate Courts are each elected to six-year terms.[5] The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector of the district, licensed to practice law in the state, under the age of 70, and have five years of experience practicing law.

Noteworthy events

On August 27, 2024, Judge Ryan was removed from her docket of cases after a court official turned over telephone recordings of her making racist and homophobic comments. [6]
