Kathryn Matayoshi
Kathryn Matayoshi is a former Hawaii superintendent of education. She was appointed to the position by the Hawaii State Board of Education, effective September 13, 2012. She was reappointed to the position in June 2014 and served through June 30, 2017.[1][2][3]
Biography
Matayoshi graduated from Hilo High School and went on to earn a B.A. from Carleton College and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. She clerked in the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii for the late Samuel King before joining the law firm Goodsil Anderson Quinn & Stifel. She later worked at the Hawaiian Electric Company Inc. before launching her career in public service.[1]
Matayoshi served as the director of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs from 1995-2002 and as chief of staff for the City and County of Honolulu Board of Water Supply from 2002-2005. She worked as a strategic planning consultant from 2005-2007 and went on to serve as president and CEO of Community Links Hawaii from 2006-2007. Prior to her appointment as Hawaii superintendent of education, Matayoshi served as the executive director of the Hawaii Business Roundtable from 2007-2009.[1]

Matayoshi served as acting and interim Hawaii superintendent of education from January 8, 2010, to September 12, 2010. She assumed office as the superintendent of education on September 13, 2010, and served through June 30, 2017.[1][3]
About the office
The Hawaii Superintendent of Education is a state executive position in the Hawaii state government. The superintendent is the administrative head of the Hawaii Department of Education, which runs the state's K-12 public education system. The superintendent is appointed by the Hawaii Board of Education, the executive body responsible for policy and rule-making in the department, and holds office for a term of four years.[4]

Matayoshi was unanimously appointed as Hawaii superintendent of education by the Hawaii State Board of Education, effective September 13, 2010.[5] The Hawaii Board of Education reappointed Matayoshi when her initial contract expired in June 2014. She served an additional three-year term through June 30, 2017.[2][3]
