Katie Behnke is a political consultant working in the state of Colorado. Along with Kristin Strohm, Behnke is the managing partner of the Starboard Group in Greenwood Village, Colo. Before co-founding Starboard, Behnke worked as press assistant for former Governor Bill Owens and as deputy press secretary for Pete Coors in his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign.[1] Behnke is married to former University of Colorado football player Joel Harris.[2]
Career
Katie Behnke co-founded The Starboard Group in 2009 after working as a communications specialist in campaigns for former Gov. Bill Owens (R-Colo.) and Pete Coors (R). As a managing partner of Starboard, Behnke served as the finance director and deputy campaign manager for U.S. Senator Cory Gardner's 2014 campaign.[1]
In 2014, all of the clients who worked with The Starboard Group were elected, including U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R). The group's success led the Colorado Statesman to observe, "Starboard cemented its unofficial but commonly-known title as Colorado’s conservative fundraiser-in-chief." The paper further reported on how Strohm and Behnke secure funds for their clients: "The managing duo requires every Starboard staffer to give back to the community, whether that means serving on boards of a nonprofit or getting involved otherwise. The charity is equal parts altruism and economic calculus. If elected officials court deep-pocketed donors by having their fundraising representatives show goodwill in times when they are not primarily vying for fat checks, their campaign accounts are much more likely to fill up come the next election cycle."[3]
