My name is Katie Cordell and I'm running for Ranlo Town Commissioner! I joined the United States Navy in 2006 and spent four and a half years onboard the USS Carl Vinson, completing multiple deployments. After my service, I started a family with my husband, Keith. While raising our daughter, I've been working towards my degree: a Bachelor's of Science in American and Latin American History at Troy University. After Keith completed his service, we decided to make Ranlo our home! I have helped create a softball league for young girls and love working to better the world around me. My family has experienced the growing pains of a town in flux and after long consideration, I have decided to try and use my military experience to make Ranlo a better place to live. Here's how I plan to do just that: I will bring openness and transparency to the office. I will be accessible and listen to Ranlo's citizens. I will embrace technology and use that to keep citizens informed. I will give voice to those who feel ignored by our current government. I will always be 100% honest, and I will work to make Ranlo shine!
  • Institute a more transparent and open government
  • Divert spending from vanity projects to essential infrastructure
  • Ensure clear communication between government and citizens
Responsible spending, infrastructure, open and honest communication.
I look up to people who value making the world a better place. One of my biggest heroes was Mr. Rogers. He spent his life putting good into the world and teaching children like me that it is okay to have feelings and how we can deal with those feelings. His efforts gave kids a healthy perspective on the world and he made a difference in the lives of children all around the country. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of those around me in a positive way.
Trust in government is key. When leadership acts as if there is something to hide or is not fully honest with citizens, that erodes trust and causes people to check out. Without that trust, the government functions poorly and this can lead to a loss of good leaders, worsening relations between government and the people it serves. Government should always be a tool for serving the people and bettering their lives. When it fails in that goal, it is up to the elected officials to correct and make the government serve the people.
One power held by town leaders is the ability to work with local entrepreneurs to bring in more businesses. While ultimately business is a private enterprise, local leaders should be heavily involved in attracting the right kinds of business to smartly grow the town's tax base and attract residents and visitors who will bring in more money to the town.
I believe that previous government experience has little bearing on the ability to effectively manage a municipality.
Patience, willingness to communicate, and care for others are the cornerstone of any elected office. From there, fiscal responsibility is a key aspect of municipal government.
