Katie has been a Cherokee County resident since 2007 and has had children in District 3 schools since 2014. She consistently volunteers at her children’s schools as room parent and currently serves on the School Council at her daughter’s school. She is also an avid volunteer in her community. Among other things, she has coached youth soccer and leads a Girl Scout troop.

She attended the University of Florida and earned a degree in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences before serving locally as a youth minister at an Episcopal Church for fourteen years. During her time there, she met her husband, had two children, and learned a lot about youth and the desires that parents have for their children! Her years in youth ministry also led to opportunities to write and publish curriculum, which continues to be an ongoing project and passion.

Katie also worked as a church consultant and project manager for a ministry that collaborates with churches from all around the country. Spending time with churches during times of transition provided a lot of practice in listening to concerned parents and developing a workable plan using the available resources.
  • We must respecting the dignity of every student: The students’ lives do not begin and end at school. They are complex, unique individuals that enter with talents, challenges and histories that should be acknowledged, accommodated, and embraced. Every child deserves a good education, not just the ones that conveniently fit into the boxes we have created.
  • Teachers are our most valuable asset: The teachers of Cherokee County are creative and hardworking. The talent and passion they bring into the classroom should be confirmed, celebrated, and trusted.
  • Prepared for life after graduation: Graduation is not just about completing something; it’s about being ready for something new. Our students deserve an education that prepares them for life after high school, including age-appropriate discussions of our history and the freedom to explore topics that interest them.
Katie is passionate about ensuring that public education benefits ALL students. We need to provide options for all type of learners. We need to offer honest histories. We need to honor who are students are so that they can grow into flourishing, contributing members of society.

Katie also believes that teachers need to be trusted and compensated as professionals. Our communities are incredibly dependent on our public educators but that is rarely reflected in pay and respect.
