Campaign themes

2014

Newbanks highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:

The school board serves as the community’s direct connection to our school district, acting as the eyes, ears, and voice of our community. It is time for a New Direction and Focus for our schools – greater community input, accessibility, and transparency in decision-making. I believe in keeping our students engaged in school and learning at full capacity, the importance of arts in education, and the importance of extra-curricular activities at all levels, not just high school.

The Board needs to have greater transparency and community input. I would like to establish Citizens’ Committees and Panels to work with staff on addressing issues and long-term projects and goals for the district. Parents, graduates, retired educators, professionals in our community – all have something to contribute.

The Board needs to be more accessible to the community. They need to communicate early and often with parents and the community on upcoming issues through social media, Connect Eds, and all the tools in the district’s toolbox. We need School Site Input that actually translates into priorities and action. Instead of being a top-down organization, let’s work from the bottom up – focus on our core mission – educating our children, our next generation of leaders! We need to give our teachers the basic tools they need to educate our children.[4]
