A native of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Katie Pitts Olson learned about hard work and public service early on. Her father was a firefighter for Provo City for 21 years. He often worked two to three jobs to make ends meet on a public servant salary.

Katie graduated from Brigham Young University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in humanities and editing. She married Jacob Olson in 2013. In 2016, ten days before the birth of their second daughter, Jacob left his job due to a debilitating mental health condition. Faced with supporting her family, Katie returned to school and work after having been a stay-at-home mom for two years.

Katie completed her master’s in public administration in 2019, with a dual emphasis in finance and program evaluation, also from BYU. Her internship brought her to the sweet, sweet City of South Jordan. That’s when she committed to life as a public servant in local government.

Professionally, Katie focuses on continuous improvement and program evaluation. Her role with the City of South Jordan as Associate Director of Strategy and Budget includes aligning the budget with City priorities and values. She also checks programs for potential improvements and efficiency gains. She developed policies for the City’s Workforce Housing and Down Payment assistance programs. Katie also administers the Community Development Block Grant program, where she advocates for low- and moderate-income residents.
  • Make Informed Decisions: I’ve dedicated my career to continuous government improvement. This means that every day I evaluate options from all angles, and I run the numbers. I’m not afraid to ask tough questions--and I don’t take, “That’s the way we’ve always done it” for an answer. As your state rep, the votes I cast will be backed by data, logic, and the voices of my constituents. I will always prioritize data over daydreams.
  • Support Balanced Growth: Change in Utah is happening. How it happens is up to us! We can balance growth and stability without sacrificing what we love. As your state rep, I will help local governments become more self-sufficient. I will hold developers accountable for paying their fair share. And I will encourage cities to offer a variety of housing types for all incomes. We can preserve our open space and build strong communities through bold, smart planning.
  • Advocate for Strong Cities: The world is complex, but each day firefighters, police officers, and public works employees make sure the basics of your day stay simple. It’s the essential services that unite us. As your state rep, I will ensure local governments have the power they need to meet your needs through timely, informed local control. I will advocate for legislation that makes our cities, counties, and schools a safe and happy home for all of us.
Air Quality and Utah's Drought

Utah’s natural beauty and resources are unparalleled. As your state representative, I will vote for smart, data-driven solutions to water quantity and quality issues. Similarly, we need to work together to solve one of Utah’s most pressing economic and health concerns: our air quality. Utah needs bold state leadership now to work with industry and our citizens to ensure clearer and cleaner air. To attract and retain businesses and families, we need air that is always safe for our children and our most vulnerable to breathe. I will prioritize legislation that offers evidence-based solutions to this critical and growing problem.

Mental Health Matters

My life has been touched by suicide too many times. The struggles I’ve witnessed in friends, neighbors, and family members due to mental health issues are forever written on my heart. We can do more to support research, access, and affordability for mental health treatments. Utah can become a beacon of hope for tackling these issues with sensitivity, compassion, and true love.
