I am 45 years old, born to a preacher and a teacher. I grew up in Wilmington, NC, my birthplace, and have lived in Carteret County for over 30 years. I attended UNCW, and was elected their Sophomore Class Senator in 1998. Met my partner Sterling in 1999, and we had our first child, Autumn who is now 21, in 2022. I graduated from Carteret Community College in 2004, and had Ebon a month later. He is now 19. I had Bella in 2008, and opted to stay at home due to the cost of daycare. I attended my local precinct meeting in 2016 on a whim, and the rest I guess you could say is history in the making. I worked my way up the local Democratic Party, starting with county Secretary and was elected County Chair in 2019. Alongside County Chair, although I am temporarily resigned as Chair due to this Primary, I am also Vice Chair in a state chair appointed position for the NCDP Resolutions and Platform Committee, a committee I have represented our district in since 2018. I am also currently on the NCDP Auxiliaries and Organizations Committee, DWNC Legislative Committee, and I am the Secretary for the NCDP County Chair Association. I am also the current President of Coastal Carolina Riverwatch, and the President Elect of the NC Sierra Club.
  • My main issue for this election is the protection of the 14th Amendment, which we all know as “equal protection under the law.” Side note, this applies to men, as the ERA has not passed yet to ensure women's equality legally. Back to the 14th, after the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, state legislatures became pivotal in decisions once protected under this amendment, causing women's reproductive health, LGBTQIA+, civil rights and more at risk. The precedence set by the overturning of that Supreme Court case ruling puts many rights potentially at risk in the hands of our current legislature in the near future. We need politicians that understand the implications of these decisions.
  • I believe we need to invest in building more affordable housing, as well as revamping old hotels, schools, and other similar buildings into housing options. Affordable doesn't mean $250,000 for a majority of us in Carteret and Craven counties, or across the state honestly. Affordable should actually be equal to attainable.
  • Students should be taught true history, and not skewed history. Part of growing up is seeing the decisions made by those before us, and learning from these decisions as we move forward. All students deserve access to free school meals and a solid basic education.
Equity and equality are extremely important to me. We need to protect our democracy, and make it work for everyone. I am passionate about voting rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, women's rights, education, mental health and addiction, coastal resilience and environmental justice, and public education.
Growing up, Atticus Finch was my role model. Once I became an adult, I understood Atticus more and more. I greatly admire and look up to President Roosevelt, FDR, and Congressman John Lewis for the change that they made to our country.
I remember watching the bombing in the Gulf War on TV in 1990. I was 12 years old at the time.
I worked in a Pharmacy all four years of High School and one year of college.
State Governors and State Legislatures should have a good working relationship for the good of the people they represent.
Overturning the super majority of the General Assembly and moving the state forward for the better of the people who live here.
Of course. Bills cannot be passed without votes, from every party preferably.
I would be interested in running for a different office after I cut my teeth in the General Assembly.
It is absolutely necessary to compromise across the aisle in order to get things done. You can work together, without compromising your values and morals.
