Political career
Colorado Commissioner of Education (2016 - 2023)
Anthes was appointed as the interim commissioner of education on May 20, 2016, following the abrupt resignation of Rich Crandall. Crandall had assumed the position on January 19, 2016, to replace the interim commissioner, Elliott Asp, who had been appointed upon the retirement of former Commissioner Robert Hammond. Crandall resigned after only four months in office, citing an incompatibility between the workload and family obligations; at the time, his family resided outside of Colorado.[1]
Anthes had previously worked as the department's chief of staff but had submitted her resignation only five days prior to her appointment; she had been with the department for five years. Anthes told reporters that her resignation was a "personal decision" and that she was "excited to get to work on this transition."[2][5]
“Katy Anthes is fantastic,” Crandall said of the appointment. “I can only say good about her.”[2]
After serving as the interim commissioner for seven months, the board formally appointed Anthes as the Colorado Commissioner of Education on December 14, 2016.[3] Anthes stepped down on June 26, 2023. [6]
