What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Healthcare reform to keep protections for pre-existing conditions Working to ensure everyone has access to a quality, affordable public education Ensuring a living wage for workers
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am the most passionate about every citizen having access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. I am willing and able to have the uncomfortable (but necessary) conversations about the realities of healthcare costs. As a data-driven leader, I will use all available data to create solutions that will work for all and will be effective in all communities.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
An elected official should be willing to be transparent about where they stand and what they are doing in office but also be willing to hear constructive criticism and input from constituents on a regular basis.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
As a research scientist with a Master's Degree and a certified Six Sigma Green Belt, I have acquired the tools to break down problems into manageable and solvable pieces. It is literally my job to go into work everyday and solve problems, big and small. I also have learned how to collaborate with people who don't always agree with me. I plan on using these problem solving and collaboration skills to work across the aisle to pass legislation that will benefit the nation.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
I believe the core responsibilities of an elected official are to represent the people of your district no matter if they voted for you or supported you financially. The elected official is the voice in government for those people, not special interests.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The first historical event I really remember is the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster. I was 4 years old at the time and I remember it was a huge deal because there was a teacher on board.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My very first job was at the Sonic in Collinsville, IL. I was a carhop there until I went to college in the fall of 2000.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love being around my family and Thanksgiving has always brought my family together.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I have a print of "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper that hung at my grandmother's house. Whenever I see it, I think of her.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Eight Days a Week by the Beatles
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Affording a quality post-high school education is something I have struggled with in my life. I was able to put myself through school with scholarships, grants, and loans as my parents were not able to assist with my tuition.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Non-partisan independent commissions to make sure there are competitive races.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
It is beneficial but not essential. It is also beneficial to have worked as a volunteer with community organizations as a way of getting to know the needs of people in the community.
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education and The Work Force Ways and Means Oversight and Government Reform Science, Space, and Technology
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
No, I think a 4 year term for representatives makes much more sense because it is difficult to get anything done in Congress if you have to turn around right after an election and start running for re-election.
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I think term limits for representatives and senators is something that should be considered and discussed.
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I recently attended a forum on Human Trafficking where I heard from survivors. I heard about how difficult it is to leave the abusive situations, bring the perpetrators to justice, and then integrate back into society when one is starting life from scratch. It brought to light how we need to hear from people who have had experiences such as these when it comes to reforming our healthcare, criminal justice, and social systems.
