Issues in the district

District partners with foundation to create dropout intervention program

In March 2016, Katy ISD announced a new partnership with a local mall and the Simon Youth Foundation to create a dropout intervention program that would allow high school dropouts to continue their education and to receive their degrees. The Simon Property Group, a company that owns and manages shopping malls around the country including the local shopping center Katy Mills, founded the Simon Youth Foundation when they noticed a lot of teenagers loitering around their malls at times when they should have been in school. The foundation seeks to assist school districts in providing solutions and alternatives for high school drop-outs.

The partnership called for the construction of a 5,000 square foot facility to be named the Katy Mills Simon Youth Academy within the Katy Mills mall. The foundation agreed to fund the building of the space while the district agreed to provide six teachers, a principal, a counselor, and a part-time social worker for the program. At the announcement of the partnership, the academy was slated to open at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.[12]
