I am a former teacher, a parent of 3 Brevard Public Schools students, and a 15 year resident of district 5. My husband is a pastor at a local church, and we have been serving the communities of Palm Bay, West Melbourne, and Melbourne since we moved here. I taught middle school music in Kentucky and Texas for 7 years before our children were born, and I worked as a substitute teacher in Brevard before I was elected. As both an employee, a parent, a volunteer, and now a board member, I have seen our schools inside and out.
  • I am the most experienced candidate. Not only have I served on the school board during a global pandemic and spent the time listening to constituents on every side of every issue, I have experience in the classroom, and 13+ years of experience as a parent of children in 4 or our D5 schools.
  • I believe we an meet the needs of every student without introducing political ideologies that divide us. We need to teach our history - the good, the bad, and the ugly - but not separate students into oppressor/oppressed groups. We can choose unity.
  • Our students need lots of support to recover from the academic losses of the pandemic years. To do this, we have to address our workforce shortage, especially with teachers.
I want to see our community involved in our schools as much as possible. We need more volunteers, mentors, business and community partners, internship opportunities for our career and technical programs, etc. These make our schools safer, our students more engaged, and provide the inspiration for them to see a future for themselves in the workforce and society.
My 5th grade class was watching the space shuttle Challenger when it exploded shortly after lift off in 1986. We had been reading about Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher astronaut. I was 11. Interestingly, one of the elementary schools in my district is named after Christa McAuliffe.
I taught General Music and Choir at R.A. Jones Middle School in Florence, KY, for 3 years.
