Candidate Connection

Keith Cobbett participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on October 5, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Keith Cobbett's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Protecting the rights of gun owners.

Helping with the opioid crisis but voting in favor of legalizing cannabis.
Figuring out a way, and introducing legislation to, lower property taxes - without voting in favor of a State income and/or sales tax.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Cannabis legislation is important to me. My brother died from a heroin overdoes in 2011. I have a unique position and I feel that cannabis can help with the opioid crisis. With cannabis legalized, we can model other States like Colorado and copy their successes and bring them to New Hampshire.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Keith Cobbett answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

First and foremost I admire my father. He is a Marine Vietnam Vet. He has shown me strength and courage through his continued battles with the effects of Agent Orange.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
I study and devote a fair amount of time to researching the US Constitution. I believe that the books related to that, including "The Debate on the Constitution" is a dry, but informative read. I also enjoy the books written by Judge Andrew P. Napolitano. He is very smart and institutive. Always does his research. KrisAnne Hall is another individual I listen to.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and integrity. An elected official needs to understand that they work for the people and not themselves.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
As a small business owner, I know how to negotiate. I know how to listen to individuals. I can get things done.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Doing what is right for their constituents. People have to work, so they intrust government to be run by officials that will have their best interests in mind.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like people to say that I was instrumental in lowering property taxes for all the home owners in the State.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The most memorable one was the Challenger disaster. I was watching it on tv while in elementary school. I was 11 at the time.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was working for an environmental consulting firm. I was there a total of 3 years. I learned of the horrors that pollution, and polluting for profit, can do to the environment.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
My most awkward date has to be the time I went on a date with a woman and she only wanted to talk about her last boyfriend. For 2 hours we sat at dinner sipping wine. She confessed that this date wasn't going to go anywhere as she could only concentrate on him. So, I consoled her, spoke to her and we are still friends to this day.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I love Halloween. It is a time when people can joke around, dress up and be a little more outgoing than normal. They can full relax and have a good time.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Count of Monte Cristo. The writing of the book was fantastic. The story line was even better. I found it captivating and couldn't put it down.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Batman. Because who wouldn't want to be a billionaire that helps people?[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My cats. I love my cats. They are great companions when you need them.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Broken Halos by Chris Stapleton[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
I tend to help people too much. I have a "saving people" complex. Sometimes this has put me tight financial situations. In turn, I was required to work harder and more effectively to dig myself out of holes.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The individuality of our house, as opposed to our senate, means that we have more contact with the constituents of the State. Having the 3rd largest governing body is the reason why.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. The original purpose of government, and governing officials, was these individuals were supposed to be regular people. Government was not meant to be a full time career. Being 80 and in office for the past 50-60 years, I believe you lose touch with what it's like to earn your keep.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
The upcoming property tax issues will end up hurting this State is we don't find a solution soon. Cutting spending would be the first priority in my opinion.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
I feel the governor should listen to what the representatives are saying. Don't listen to the big money funding his/her campaign. He/She works for the people of the State, not the corporations. As representatives and senators of a State, we would have the closet ties to the people.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Definitely. If you don't have a bond and/or trust relationship with individuals you work with, it is merely impossible to see different perspectives. Open communication is a necessity.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Redistricting should be based on town sizes and done fairly. Straight lines, or as straight as possible, should be utilized. Entire cities/towns should be included in a district unless otherwise impossible to do so.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Being a retired State Correctional Officer, I would stay away from that aspect. However, being a small business owner in the IT field and having a background in environmental consulting, I would like to get involved with either those two.[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I would consider a more advanced role in a party if the opportunity presented itself. Being a self proclaimed introvert, it is difficult for me sometimes to speak out. So, I think something on a technology committee or behind the scenes type role would suit me just fine.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Ron Paul[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Not at this time. I am concentrating on my State Representative race.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
The stories I keep hearing time and time again are the taxes. Nobody can afford to live anymore. The tax rate is killing this State's residents. It's time for a solution.[3]
