Lower Taxes Tax breaks for millionaires while working families pay more in taxes will not grow the Kansas economy. Keith believes in a fair tax system that works for working families. Under the leadership of Sam Brownback and Mike Petersen, Kansans have seen sales and property taxes increase. In fact, Mike Petersen voted for the largest tax increase in Kansas history and giving us the highest sales tax on food in the country. It's time to lower the burden on families. Good Education Keith Humphrey is committed to providing a good education for Kansas kids. Unfortunately, cuts to public education have gone too far. The Legislature must uphold its constitutional responsibility to Kansas kids by full restoring school funding. Working parents in the district are concerned about the future of public education in Kansas. If the inaction of Sam Brownback and Mike Petersen causes schools to close in August, then parents won't just be worrying about their kids education. They will be worrying about missing work or even losing their jobs due to a lack of childcare options. Our kids deserve the best education. We must first put the state back on a strong fiscal footing to provide it for them. Transparent Government A transparent government is the cornerstone of any democracy. Keith supports moves to make the Kansas government more open and transparent. He believes the people's business should be done in full view of the people. To make it easier for average Kansans to track their government's action, Keith will support legislation that improves streaming access to both legislative chambers, increases the power of Kansas Open Records requests and insures the legislature serves the people. Restore Fiscal Responsibility Kansas must stop relying on the one time sweeps of funds and deficit spending through the Department of Transportation. Irresponsible budget management has led to several credit downgrades and threatened core services. Sam Brownback and Mike Petersen are spending the next generation's future to pay for basic state functions today. Topeka must return to fiscal responsibility being the norm, not the exception. Support for Veterans As a Navy veteran, Keith know's that we must work to support our veterans and their families. That's why Keith worked to pass a bill in the Kansas legislature that provided death gratuity benefits for the families of fallen soldiers in the case of a federal government shut down. Also, Keith believes that Kansas must move towards establishing veteran's courts that recognize the unique issues that veterans face after returning home.[2] |
