Keith Matthews was born in Camden, New Jersey. He earned a high school diploma from Pennsauken High School and an associate degree from Gloucester County College in 1991. His career experience includes working as a registered nurse.[1]

Keith Matthews, RN is a nurse from St. Johns County, Florida. Keith has practiced extensively in hospice, emergency room, critical care, and cardiac nursing, with experience both as a bedside nurse and in management. He moved to St. Johns County from New Jersey over 25 years ago and raised his family here - one son who is a musician and business owner in St. Augustine, a son who serves in the US Air Force, and a daughter who graduated from Florida State University and is currently a nursing student at the University of North Florida.

Keith is running for Florida state House of Representatives District 18 in north St. Johns County. He aims to help steer our legislature away from our current culture wars and toward common sense, science-based policies to help families, businesses, and the environment in St. Johns County.

Keith, a life-long Democrat, enjoys fishing, boating, our beautiful beaches, his dogs, camping, the Jaguars, cooking, and a good music festival. His mother Barbara is a retired school teacher who lives in New Jersey.
  • Reproductive Rights: The right for any patient to have options regarding care should never be taken away by the government. Women should never be limited in their rights to choose what happens to their bodies or have limits on choice or contraception. Exceptions do not work and are an intrusion on the patient-physician relationship.
  • Affordability: Homeowners insurance costs in this state, as we all know, are too high. Regulators have not done nearly enough to get this under control. The focus legislatively recently seems to to limit the consumers’ right to confront the industry, which I do not agree with. I propose an independent, binding arbitration or the like to control legal costs. Since 2020, Florida is 3rd for costs due to natural disasters, yet our premiums average almost double that of number 1, Texas.
  • Vouchers: Public funds are for public schools. We must not continue to allow our tax dollars meant to support education for our youth to be diverted to private institutions, who may or may not have our children’s best interest in mind. This is just wrong. And let our teachers teach.
I am very passionate about personal freedoms, freedom from government intrusion, freedom of and from religion, and putting an end to the so-called culture wars. I am pro sensible environmental protections, controlled growth with supportive infrastructure, and am very passionate about the phrase:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”
The characteristics or principles I see as most important are being responsible stewards of the public purse, serving for the people you represent and not some personal agenda, being honest and forthright, and just doing the right thing, for this current generation and the next.
Empathy, compassion, lack of personal ego, responsibility, integrity, and I am not now nor will I ever be beholden to any corporate PAC.
I believe the most important responsibility is to be present for the people you represent. To listen to the concerns of the people, and bring those concerns to Tallahassee, keeping this foremost with every bill sponsored or proposed, every vote cast.
That I served with honesty and integrity. My truest legacies will always be my children.
The first historic event that I clearly remember was Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon. I was 5 years and 5 months old.
My first job was clamming in New Jersey, summers at the Jersey shore. I would sell the clams to neighbors.
Revolution by the Heartless Bastards
Watching people abuse and take advantage of each other. Watching politicians who are only out to serve themselves.
I believe the governor and state legislature each must listen to and respect the other, work together
Global warming mitigation, affordability, protecting freedoms such as choice and voting rights and access. Every citizen aged 18 and over must have the opportunity to vote. We also must do our best to protect Social Security and Medicare, and we must allow for smart, controlled growth.
It can be, however is not necessary in order to serve your constituents. Most important is to work for the people and not for one’s self.
Yes, I know it is imperative to build relationships with your co-legislators in order to accomplish common goals.
As a nurse, in emergency rooms and in hospice, I have heard too many to count. I know that people are hurting, worried, and struggling every day. My goal is to help everyone in the district just like I do for my patients.

Ways and Means
I am a firm believer in government and legislators being held accountable while being financially transparent. Sunshine laws must not be abused.
I support the current process for initiation, however for implementation I would like for the legislature to follow the ballot measure as passed. The felon voter rights restoration ballot initiative comes to mind, as lawmakers have placed every possible hurdle in its path on the road to implementation.
