Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Kelley Dragoo is a grassroots activist and community advocate living in Kansas City, Missouri. She has spent many years focusing on education and accountability in both the private and public sector. She believes civil servants should serve as conduits for the will of the people and that Democracy deserves more, from all of us, than simply showing up on Election Day.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Climate change, democratic representation, equity in the distribution of wealth and opportunity, social justice.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the state government and legal system?

The Lieutenant Governor is a very interesting and vital support position in the executive branch. The job, itself, oversees many different types of committees and therefore has to have a working knowledge of a wide variety of topics. In addition, this office presides over the Senate and needs to have a very solid understanding of what legislation is being brought to discussion.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Humility. I talk often about how service, in this capacity, should be a sacrifice. Being an elected official should be, in many ways, losing yourself in the service of the whole. I think that is what we are missing currently in our political process. Our leaders have stopped listening to what the citizens are telling them they need and instead acting on their own, personal, wants. Humility allows us to recognize that we are not the most important, we are simply part of something bigger.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Transparency, effective communication, solid working relationships.

What legacy would you like to leave?

It is my desire to show people how important it is to engage with the political process and that there is no 'right' way to look, or be, for our elected officials.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was working for Bob Evans Restaurant when I was fifteen. I had this job until I went to college. It taught me about service and responsibility.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Best question.
Illusions by Richard Bach and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The first is one of those books that you can come back to, again and again, and find something new - learn something new. The second, shows us that creation is an act that requires responsibility.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

I just want to be me.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

What responsibilities of this office do you personally consider the most important?

I think the most important part of the Lieutenant Governor's job is presiding over the legislature. It is vital that these two branches of government work together effectively and efficiently in order to best serve the people.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

Currently, people are fairly disenchanted with "politicians" as a whole. I believe it is my strength that I am not a political figure - while still understanding the fundamentals of how our government works. Better yet, I am an activist, which means I get things done.
