2021 is budget year in the legislature, which should demand a fiscally responsible and transparent budget. I am thankful we currently have a "rainy day fund" by which we can offset a majority of the COVID-19 incurred deficit. I believe we can create a working budget - without raising taxes, and without cutting essential programs. This will be a critical time where legislators must put aside their own personal agendas, and act solely on behalf of the People of Washington State - with integrity.
At the end of the week, Justice Opala encouraged me to pursue law school, saying that in all his years, it was refreshing to meet someone who was willing to consider a thing from all sides and still come back to center, weighing it against the Truth of the Constitution itself. Those words will forever be imprinted on my heart. A few weeks after his departure, I received a surprise letter in the mail - a professional recommendation. Knowing he believed in me, that he considered me worthy of his trust, that he was willing to put his reputation as a Supreme Court Justice on the line in recommending me, was truly humbling. That simple letter served as a formative mile marker in my life. Though I did not have the means to pursue law school, that internal fire continued to burn. Seventeen years later, the call on my life that Justice Opala recognized has come to fruition - a deep and unmovable passion to stand and be a voice for Freedom and Truth, under God, in service to We the People.
Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Peggy Carter are two of my most favorite Marvel characters. They stand for all things good and integrous. They have "I can do this all day" grit. While they are undyingly loyal to what is right and true, when they disagree with someone, they do so with both love and respect. I have three favorite scenes in Civil War - Two with Tony attempting to convince Steve to sign the Sokovia Accords (Starts at minutes 27:52 and 57:48), and Peggy Carter's funeral (Starts at minute 31:35) ...
Sharon Carter: "I asked her once, how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. And she said, "Compromise where you can, and where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move. It is your duty, to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say, "No. You move."
Moments later, after the funeral, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), approaches Steve and during their conversation she attempts to convince Steve to sign the Sokovia Accords ...
Natasha: "Just because it's the path of least resistance doesn't mean it's the wrong path. Staying together is more important than how we stay together."
Steve: "What are we giving up to do it? I'm sorry, Nat. I can't sign it."
Natasha: "I know."
Steve: "Well then what are you doing here?"
Natasha: "I didn't want you to be alone."

I take building relationships very seriously. So much so that when I told my husband I was going to run for office (which he has fully supported from the moment I told him), the first thing I'm going to do when I am given a list of those who are elected/re-elected is ... send personal invitations to each and every legislator and senator, inviting them to dinner. In our home, at our table. I believe that when we are willing to sit down and get to know a person for who they are, and truly seek to understand why they care about the things they do, we build bridges. Communication is key. We may not always agree on every single issue, but we should be able to treat each other with respect.
