As a candidate for Ramsey County Commissioner, I believe the most important characteristics for an elected official are integrity, accountability, and fairness. Elected officials must be honest and transparent in their decision-making, ensuring they build trust with the community. Accountability means being responsible for their actions and responsive to the needs and concerns of the people they serve.

Equity and fairness are central to my values, ensuring that all voices are heard, especially those from underserved communities. Collaboration is also key—working alongside other officials, community leaders, and residents to develop comprehensive solutions to the challenges we face.

Empathy is another critical principle, as understanding the lived experiences of constituents helps inform policies that truly address community needs. In addition, an elected official must have a strong vision for the future, planning not only for immediate needs but also for the long-term prosperity of the county.

Finally, dedication to public service and a tireless commitment to improving the lives of residents are essential qualities of effective leadership. These principles guide my approach to public service, and they will remain at the core of my work as Ramsey County Commissioner.
I possess several qualities that would make me a successful Ramsey County Commissioner. My compassion drives me to understand and address the needs of my constituents. As a leader, I inspire and empower others to work together toward common goals. I value collaboration, building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders to foster effective solutions. Transparency is fundamental to my approach, ensuring that my decisions and actions are open to public scrutiny. These qualities, combined with my commitment to equity, enable me to serve our community effectively.
The core responsibilities of a Ramsey County Commissioner include setting policies that impact essential services like housing, transportation, healthcare, and public safety. Advocacy is a key aspect of the role—commissioners must listen to and address the concerns of their constituents, ensuring that all voices, especially those from underserved communities, are heard.

Another responsibility is engaging with the community, maintaining open communication with residents, businesses, and organizations to develop effective solutions for local challenges. Commissioners also focus on strategic planning, creating long-term plans for economic development, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.

Collaboration is vital, as commissioners often work with other government agencies, nonprofits, and private partners to tackle regional challenges. Additionally, they oversee the delivery of county services, ensuring that programs like healthcare, public safety, and social services are accessible and equitable for all residents.

In summary, a Ramsey County Commissioner is tasked with improving the quality of life for the community through thoughtful governance, budget management, advocacy, and collaboration.
The first historical event I remember is the September 11 attacks in 2001. I was 13 years old at the time. The shocking nature of the event, the media coverage, and the profound impact it had on the world shaped my understanding of global issues and the importance of community and resilience in the face of tragedy.
My very first job was working at Mille Lacs’s early education program as a teachers assistant. I started working there when I was 15 and worked there until after graduation. It was the best job, I worked with children from babies to school age and didn’t have to work weekends!
I love reading and have so many favorite books. My favorite book/series is The Prey series by John Sandford. It follows the character Lucas Davenport, a former police officer and current investigator for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The series is a blend of crime thriller and detective fiction, featuring Davenport as he tackles complex criminal cases, often involving serial killers and other violent criminals. The series is set primarily in Minnesota, with many scenes taking place in urban areas like Minneapolis and rural parts of the state. It has great character development, complex plots, recurring characters, and good themes.
There are several little-known powers and responsibilities held by Ramsey County Commissioners that more people should be aware of such as:

Public Safety and Emergency Management: Commissioners are involved in emergency management and preparedness, developing plans and allocating resources for disaster response and community safety.
Environmental Regulation: They enforce local environmental regulations and promote sustainability initiatives, managing waste disposal, water resources, and land conservation.
Community Engagement and Advocacy: Commissioners actively engage with their communities, advocating for residents’ needs and forming partnerships with local organizations to address specific issues.
Cultural and Recreational Investments: They allocate funding for parks, recreational facilities, and cultural programs, enhancing the community’s quality of life.
Intergovernmental Relations: Commissioners represent the county in intergovernmental affairs, collaborating with other entities to influence broader policies affecting their communities.

Understanding these powers can help constituents appreciate the significant impact Commissioners have on various aspects of community life.
I believe that having previous experience in government or politics is a yes and no answer. Here is why; Yes: Previous experience in government or politics is beneficial for holders of the Ramsey County Commissioner office. My work with the county has provided me with firsthand insight into local government operations, the community’s needs, and the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders. This background equips me to make informed decisions that directly impact residents and advocate effectively for their needs. Understanding the intricacies of public administration and budget management allows for more efficient governance and responsiveness to community concerns.

No: While having prior experience in government or politics can be advantageous, it is not the only determinant of success in this role. My professional experience working with the county has granted me valuable skills and a deep understanding of community dynamics. This perspective enables me to approach the role with fresh ideas and a strong commitment to public service, focusing on the needs of constituents rather than adhering strictly to traditional political frameworks.

So, while previous experience in government can enhance effectiveness in the commissioner role, it is equally important to have diverse perspectives and a strong connection to the community. My background allows me to blend experience with innovative approaches, ensuring that I serve all residents effectively and equitably.

I am honored to be endorsed by the following: Ramsey County DFL, IBEW 110, Women Winning, LiUna Minnesota & North Dakota, Saint Paul Area Association of Realtors, SIEU MN State Council, Operating Engineers Local 49, St. Paul Area Chamber PAC, NorthEast Metro Climate Action, Ramsey County Board Chair Victoria Reinhardt, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, Senator Mary Kunesh, U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, U.S. Senator Tina Smith, Ramsey County Commissioners, Nicole Fretham, Mary Jo McGuire, and Rafael Ortega, Former Ramsey County Commissioner Trista Martinson, and community leader Sue Vento.
I believe financial transparency and government accountability are crucial for building trust between elected officials and the communities they serve.

Transparency involves providing open access to financial information, allowing residents to see how public funds are used, including budgets and expenditures. This clarity helps taxpayers understand the impact of their contributions on community services.

Accountability means that elected officials must be responsible for their actions and decisions. Mechanisms such as regular audits and public feedback forums are essential to ensure that officials prioritize community needs and remain answerable to their constituents.

Community engagement is key in this process. Involving residents in budget discussions helps align spending with community priorities, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively.

High levels of transparency and accountability also serve to prevent corruption. Clear processes and robust oversight make it more difficult for unethical practices to occur, ultimately promoting integrity in government.

Moreover, prioritizing these principles contributes to building trust in democracy. When residents see their government operating with transparency and accountability, they are more likely to engage in civic activities and support local initiatives.

I believe that fostering financial transparency and accountability is fundamental to effective leadership and public trust, ensuring that all community members feel heard, respected, and valued in the decision-making process.
