Kelly Pope-Black is a family court judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit in South Carolina.[1] She was elected to the court by the South Carolina General Assembly and assumed the bench in July 2013.[2]

Education

Pope received her B.S. in sociology and political science from Presbyterian University in 1995 and her J.D. from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001.[3][4]

Career

Immediately prior to joining the court, Pope was a partner at the firm of Mooneyham, Berry & Pope, LLC in Greenville, South Carolina. She has also worked at the firms of Babb & Brown, P.C., Christian & Davis, and Cobourn & Saleeby, LLP, and specialized in civil litigation in the fields of family, criminal, construction, and personal injury law.[4][5]

Approach to the law

After being elected to the Seventh Judicial Circuit, Pope was quoted:

I think when you work with children who have been abused, your perspective does shift a little...[m]y primary goal will always be to protect the children of this state and to treat those who come before me fairly.[5][6]
