An effort to recall District 5 City Councilwoman Kema Dawson did not go to a vote in Monroe, Louisiana.[1][2]

Recall supporters

District 5 residents Stanley Holmes and Gwen Dixon initiated the recall process. Marie Brown, a former candidate for mayor, also said she was a part of the group organizing the recall campaign.[3][4]

Organizers said that they were trying to recall Dawson because of her lack of support for an economic development plan proposed by the Southside Economic Development District. Brown also alleged that Dawson had focused too much on advancing funding for the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, to the detriment of District 5 residents.[3]

Recall opponents

Dawson gave the following comment on the recall campaign to News-Star, "This recall attempt is designed to be a distraction, and it is nothing more than a political weapon. ... I'm not going to let the actions of a few people outside of my district divert my attention from continuing the progress that the majority of the voters in District 5 elected me to accomplish."[3]

Organizers filed the recall petition on September 7, 2022. To force a recall election to be scheduled, they needed to collect 1,954 signatures within 180 days. This figure represented one-third of registered voters from Monroe City Council District 5.[1]

The recall did not go to a vote after organizers did not collect the required number of signatures by the March 7 deadline.[2]
