Kenneth Marshall Gordon was a Democratic candidate for Colorado Secretary of State in the 2014 elections. On December 22, 2013, Gordon's family confirmed that the Denver politician had died of an apparent heart attack. He was 63.[1]

Gordon was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1992-2000 and the Colorado State Senate from 2001-2008. He served as its Senate Majority Leader from 2005 to 2008.

Biography

Gordon was a Detroit native. He attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate degrees in economics and political science. In 1975, he graduated from law school at Boston University.[2]

Gordon's legal experience included thirteen years in private practice. He worked as a Colorado public defender from 1976 to 1980. He also worked as an adjunct professor teaching political science.[2]

Political career

Colorado Secretary of State race (2006)

Gordon ran for the position of Colorado Secretary of State in 2006, but lost narrowly to then-state treasurer Mike Coffman (Colorado) (R) in the general election.[3]

Colorado State Senate (2001-2008)

Gordon was first elected to the Colorado State Senate in 2000 and took office in 2001. He served as Senate Assistant Minority Leader from 2003-2004, and then as Senate Majority Leader in 2008.[2]

Colorado House of Representatives (1992-2000)

Gordon served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1992-2000. He was the House Minority Leader from 1999-2000, and then left the chamber to serve in the Senate.[2]

Gordon was entered to run in the election to the Colorado Secretary of State. It was unclear, prior to his death, if Gordon would seek the Democratic nomination in the primary election on June 24, 2014.[4] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
