I believe there are specific areas for improvement to which I can bring a fresh perspective, especially concerning how the Port taxes King Country residents through property taxes. We have not had a Port commissioner with an extensive background in international aviation and passenger air transportation. Nor has there been a commissioner for many years who is a long-time resident of south King County or one of the cities surrounding Sea-Tac airport. I see the importance of airport operations - and the businesses that rely on commercial air transportation - becoming more prominent in the work of the Port Commission as the Puget Sound Seaport Alliance matures. While still critically important, consideration of issues by the Port of Seattle on marine shipping will likely occupy less time on the agenda as the Port of Tacoma transitions to the lead on seaport operations. The scope of work and responsibilities of a Port of Seattle Commissioner are a good fit with my experience. I see the commission's work as an interesting challenge and an opportunity to apply my experience in policy-making to improving our regional community. One of the most important issues at the Port of Seattle is establishing a more rigorous governance process that includes greater public outreach and community engagement. Port policies should be refined to include hearings and activities that allow for greater public participation. Broad strategic goals, including the creation of additional jobs, that are part of the Port's current plan are worthy of support, but proper implementation is extremely important to insure that the desired results are achieved. Because many of the issues that come before the Commission are complex it is essential that the policy making process includes a thorough understanding of each party's concerns in advance. I would work diligently to improve the governance process to better reflect public interests.[1][3] |
