Ken's values are rooted in his family and faith. With parents born and raised in Avalon Park and Altgeld Gardens, Ken's mother and father taught him to never forget where he came from. As a result, Ken has always fought for a system where everyone has an equal opportunity to get a job, a home, and a good education.

Ken's passion for service comes from his upbringing as a low-income kid who faced racism and economic struggles growing up. He was raised primarily by a single mother who made just enough to put food on the table for him and his sister. Ken's parents instilled in him the importance of faith and "letting [his] light shine before others." Ken's strong faith roots and his commitment to education at a very early age gave him the push he needed to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and become a practicing attorney.

As a lawyer, Ken has dedicated hundreds of hours, pro bono, to successfully representing individuals who cannot afford lawyers. He has represented tenants in their eviction cases, keeping them in their homes or stopping them from homelessness.

Ken has also represented immigrants who are victims of domestic violence in their asylum proceedings. When Trump implemented his first travel ban, Ken joined a group of lawyers at O'Hare International Airport to provide legal assistance and comfort to law abiding immigrants in the ensuing chaos.

Throughout my life, I have lived the disastrous affects of poverty. My mom struggled every day, working two jobs, just to keep food on the table for my sister and I. Fortunately, my mom was able to find affordable housing in a neighborhood that had a good public school. I graduated from college at UIC and law school from the University of Chicago and became a lawyer. Every family should have the opportunities that I had. I am passionate about ensuring that every single Illinoisan has access to affordable housing, a good school and good paying job.
Serving in a position of public trust requires that elected officials are transparent and act with honesty and integrity. The law serves as a guidepost for legislators but it should not be the standard. As a legislator, I will seek to do what is right and not simply limit myself to doing what is legal.
Illinois is in desperate need of independent legislators who will work to change a political system that is riddled with corruption that in many instances is completely legal. I will strive to be fiercely independent and focus on changing our rules that allow corruption to persist and fester. I hope my legacy will be that of a legislator who was the best listener in the Senate.
I began my first job when I was 15. I worked as an office aide in a local Farmers Insurance office close to my house. A work program through my high school allowed me to work a few hours a day and obtain class credit. I worked the job for a year. Following my first job, I worked 7 different jobs before I went to law school. Those jobs included an office aide at Simply Solutions Corp., a student security guard, a fry cook at Wendy's, a UIC Office of Admissions aide, a student IT tech, a student security supervisor, and a resident assistant.
Mace Windu. He was a member of the Jedi Council, a wise leader, and a fierce warrior. And, who wouldn't want to have the power of the force?
Illinois's greatest challenge is pensions. In order to ensure that our state is able to make critical investments in jobs and economic development in my district, the state must dedicate additional revenues to pensions in the next few years. Addressing our pension liability aggressively today, will save taxpayers tens of billions of dollars in the short term. Additionally, our credit rating will benefit which will help save on borrowing costs. Any funds we save can be used to invest in our schools and economic development.
Absolutely. Serving in a legislature is about working with a geographically diverse group of people. Each comes to the legislature with different passions and concerns. It would be wise to build relationships with as many legislators as possible. I foster many relationships in my law practice, even with individuals who I strongly disagree with. Ultimately, working together to solve problems is my goal as a legislator and sometimes that requires putting aside personal differences.
As a lawyer, I believe my career experience and the needs of my constituents will be very useful on the Judiciary and Criminal Law committees. Additionally, I think my service as the student member of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees and my passion for education would make me a great candidate for the Higher Education committee and the Education committee.
