Howard Jr. ran for election to the McKinley County Magistrate Court.
Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014, receiving 40.9 percent of the vote. He competed against Kimberlaine Willoughby and Robert B. Baca.
General: He won without opposition in the general election on November 4, 2014. [2][3][4]

Race decided by coin toss

After a recount, it was found that Howard and Robert B. Baca both received exactly 2,879 votes in the primary election. According to New Mexico state law, ties are to be decided by lot. On July 8, the winner was determined by a coin toss in a courthouse in Gallup, New Mexico. Howard won the toss, and therefore secured the magistrate position since there were no Republican candidates.[5]
