Kenneth L. Popejoy is a judge of the Eighteenth Circuit Court of Illinois.[1] He was elected to this position in 2004.[2] Popejoy was retained in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Education

Popejoy earned an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in 1973, going on to obtain his J.D. from the Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1977.[2]

At Michigan State, Popejoy was a premier mile-runner. He was the indoor NCAA champion in 1972, also taking the Big Ten Championships in 1972 and 1973. He qualified at the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon in 1976—a year during which he was ranked ninth overall in the world for his sub-four minute mile time. His accomplishments and contributions to the sport earned him a place in the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.[2]

Career

Throughout his law career, Popejoy has spent time coaching younger runners, including James Spivey, an Olympic miler in the 1980s and 90s.[2]

Elections

2016

Judges of the Illinois Circuit Court stand for retention after their first full term. To be retained, a judge must receive at least 60 percent of the vote.[3][4] Kenneth L. Popejoy was retained in the Illinois Eighteenth Circuit Court, Kenneth Popejoy Retention Election with 78.49 percent of the vote.
