My name is Ken Scott, and I am YOUR candidate for Bernalillo County Treasurer. I am the former Deputy Treasurer, and currently I am the Deputy Assessor. I have been endorsed by the current County Treasurer, Nancy Bearce as well as the current County Assessor. I know the county and its operation extremely well. Additionally, I am the current Treasurer for many of your favorite democrats, such as Senator Harold Pope and Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen. I humbly ask for your vote because I am a tireless
  • My commitment to the voters is to serve with ethical leadership, being held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability. My only job will be to serve this community - a community that has given me so much. Considering what is going on nationally with Trump, it is imperative that anyone seeking elective office is without reproach. There is an attack on government at all levels, but those of us seeking office at the local level are on the front lines.
  • My second message deals with modernizing the office. Current Treasurer Nancy Bearce did a fantastic job bringing the office into the 21st century. My responsibility will be to take that even further. I want to enhance the number of payment options not only for
  • Lastly, I want to Build a Better BernCo. That's not just my slogan, it is a central theme of my campaign. As your next County Treasurer, I will not only take the office to new heights, but I will strive to make Bernalillo Count a better place to live and work for everyone. I know we have had challenges in the past, but I firmly believe that our best days are ahead of us... provided we make the right choices. I am that choice.
I came to New Mexico 17 years ago; I only expected to be here a few years. Words cannot express how much I truly love this state and adore its citizens. I am passionate about making this a better place and helping the government work for everyone. I am not a career politician; if I do not get this position I will not run "for the next one". I love banking and financial management so I firmly believe I am the best choice for the people.
The Treasurer's Office is the bank for the county as a whole. Without a strong Office, many taxing entities would not receive the resources necessary to fulfill their missions.
There are many mentors that I look up to here in our community. First, I look up to my friend Senator Pope, because I know his character and how much he cares for the community. Former State Auditor Brian Colon is another example. He truly cares about this state and always shows up. Current Treasurer Nancy Bearce has always lead with ethical leadership. Assessor Lara has a passion to improve all aspects of the county and works with the community well to get things done. Sheriff John Allen works tirelessly to make this place safer for everyone. Those are just a few, but they are great examples to follow.
Good question. Not really a book on political philosophy, but I am an avid student of history, so I would say "The Changing World Order" by Ray Dalio. I also enjoy reading anything by Francis Fukuyama. As far as my leadership style, I tend to follow Simon Sinek and Brene Brown.
I think the most important characteristic for an elected official is honesty and integrity. Starting at the top of the ticket, there seems to be a severe lack in ethical leadership. Without that honesty, constituents cannot trust their leadership - and thus we cannot improve. I also think that the best leaders are empathetic, leads with their heart and with a passion to make life better for everyone they encounter. That is why I believe I am the perfect candidate for the position.
A highly inquisitive mind and a heart that cares about everyone.
The county treasurer has three core functions: collect property tax, distribute property tax to the taxing entities and invest county funds. The best candidate would be one that can oversee those crucial responsibilities while being knowledgeable about recent trends in financial management and banking to improve the office.
I believe the human condition requires us to want to leave the place better than how we found it. The most important thing for me is to make this a better community for everyone.
The falling of the Berlin Wall. I was in Germany at the time (as a kid, I was a military brat). It was such a huge deal at the time in Germany.
My first job was as a student assistant at Georgia Tech. I think I had the position for two years or so.
I am a nerd for sure. I love the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
Probably Superman. Superhuman strength AND flight? And I was a boy scout when I was younger.
Probably "Not Like Us". It's catchy!
Wanting to help everyone - even when I have very limited bandwidth. I always know that I can help someone and try to do that each and every day.
As I mentioned above, the office has three core functions. That being said, I believe as the bank for the County, there are little-known powers that the office possesses. For example, the office also runs the merchant services (credit card processing) program for the entire county and is a leader in payments. Additionally, given my position, I will also use the office to promote financial literacy across the county, particularly to underserved populations.
Absolutely. I am the only candidate with recent experience in the Treasurer's office, so I understand the office, the staff and the responsibilities extremely well. Anyone coming from the outside will not hit the ground running as fast as I can.
I think a background in banking and public finance is absolutely critical for holders of this office. I also think you want someone with a proven track record of effective management and leadership is key. I am the one candidate that has the recent experience in the office to take it to the next level.
Not my favorite, but let's keep this banking related:

Why did the banker resign?

His customers lost interest.

(which I will never do as your county treasurer)
Bernalillo County Treasurer Nancy Bearce, Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, Bernalillo County Assessor Damian Lara, State Senator Harold Pope, Adelante Progressive Caucus, LiUNA, Central Labor Council and others.
In my humble opinion, there is nothing more important than being transparent and accountable in government. That is why both of those tenets are central to my campaign.
