Low-income families do not have the same choices, options, or alternatives when it comes to public school. How can this be addressed?
Low income families have been intentionally starved and stripped of resources for many years. This can be address by making sure that the money allocated for the Cps budget goes to those schools in particular.
How would you address inequality within and between schools?
I would ensure audits of schools to make sure that monies that are received are being adequately used. I would then address inequality in schools by proposing a moratorium of funds allocated to schools that are performing at State Standard levels to ensure that the schools that are underfunded can be staffed and serviced properly. Also prompt investigations to find out why Illinois lottery revenue has not been used to save our schools like it was intended.
How can public schools better support their teachers and work more productively with the teachers’ union, parents, and the community?
Public schools could make sure that the community and the teacher's have more involvement in contract and decisions made by the union. Policies can be put in place with the help of the union to ensure support of the teacher and community are being met by CPS. Also we nee to ensure that everyone knows what resources are available them
What do you believe are the greatest needs of kids in school today? How would you prioritize these needs and address them?
Allocate for funds for crisis intervention, trauma treatment, mentorship, educational attention! And ensure that the organizations that are doing the work get direct access to the funds!
What are your proposals for supporting children before and after school? What would be your ideal afterschool programs?
There are a few good after school programs in place at the park districts in my ward. I would like to see trade and technical courses offered for high school students and tutoring before. They could earn early college credits as well. I would increase and assure maximum funds are going towards extracurricular activities and the arts like in other neighborhoods. Even if this includes reinvesting in closed school as centers for the such as facilities are scarce in my community. I would like to give kids ages 13-19 after school jobs assisting seniors to bridge the relational generational gap between the two, and earn pay. I believe in this because this is the age group that targeted by to gangs and drug dealing. Tutoring and extracurricular on school grounds could be beneficial before school as well.
Do you believe that there is corruption in Chicago politics, such as pay-to-play practices when the city awards bids? If so, how would you address it?
Yes there is corruption as we are the number one city in America for it. I would suggest that elected officials can be recalled by the constituents for not fulfilling their duties.
How would you make the city’s policies more responsive to community input instead of donors or special interests?
I would suggest that special interest groups either have a very small maximum contribution that they may make to a candidate's campaigns. Also limit city contracts and business that these groups can get from the city or the office in which they donated.
How would you handle the “recurrence of unaddressed racially discriminatory conduct by officers” identified in the U.S. Justice Department’s investigative report of the Chicago PD published in 2017?
Handle complaints with great seriousness. After 4 founded allegations of discrimination by outside investigation agencies, the officer is terminated! Ensure that officers live in areas where they serve, and or have diversity training and psychological evaluations including faith and personal belief evals. This way weakness can be strengthened and they can be placed appropriately for their tolerance.
What sort of proposals would help reduce police shootings and fatalities?
Make police get personal insurance to pay for settlements. Take away officer's pay during investigation of fatalities. Officer may receive back-pay if found not guilty. Change policy so that an officer may not retire (or collect pension or disability) during or in wake of upcoming brutality or fatality allegations.
What ideas do you have to reduce the availability of illegal or unregistered guns in Chicago?
Make gun dealer get licensed. Have stiff penalties for dealers caught selling with out license, and if out of state dealers are caught make mandatory jail time laws for them to discourage illegal gun sales across state lines. Give immunity to gun possessors who will testify against dealers.
How will you help to rebuild trust in the police department and to encourage the community to work with police?
Keep CAPS and Community relation measures already in place. Add community CAPS leaders who have relationships with precinct captains, alderman, and residents, who will responsible for keeping residents informed and involved in caps meetings and community events.
How would you address criminal justice issues such as prison reform and the reintegration of formerly incarcerated persons into city life?
Have facilities and committees specifically assigned to this population. Create at least one transitional housing facility in my ward for individuals returning to society. This is a BIG concern and area of GREAT importance to me!
How would you address the displacement of people of color and long-term residents from their neighborhoods?
Propose a Moratorium of sale of land and demolition properties to non residents. I will gift demolition properties to single mothers and low income residents.. After they have been rehabbed by residents in the different construction and trade programs. Promoting home ownership and community pride.
How would you care for the most vulnerable Chicagoans?
Get on their level by acknowledge that they exist, and be the voice to protect their human rights. This population I believe consists of our mentally ill, formerly incarcerated, homeless, minors, and seniors!
How would you ensure that development benefits residents in their neighborhoods and not solely the developers and other interests?
I will make sure there are community benefit agreements on all development coming and make sure that the residents have first access to the jobs on the sites. We will ensure that trades are available and free so that residents can compete as it relates to being subcontracted or hired.
How would you distribute revenue fairly between neighborhoods?
Based on availability and need.
How do you propose to resolve the city’s underfunded pension plan for city employees?
Anything but tax the citizens. Hold chairs accountable for mismanagement of funds in the future.
What’s your opinion on tax increment financing (a program that funds development using any additional property tax revenue that results from an increase in appraised property values)? What, if any, changes would you make to the use of TIF?
Make sure the dollars are going to the correct communities, make sure business are paying it back and paying into it in my ward. Make sure my tif representative is being utilized and getting my residents informed about tif. Lastly avoid new tif zones being created when not necessary in my ward.
How would you assess the city's finances, and if your proposals would require new spending, how would you pay for them?
Commuter tax wouldn't be a bad idea. Legalizing marijuana will help some. Minimize waste in city hall and government. Salaries, departments being over funded and more!
Would you be in favor of freezing property taxes, at least for low-income households, so that people can stay where they are living?
ABSOLUTELY!
How would you increase access to quality food and urgent care in all parts of the city?
Discourage big box companies and grocery stores from coming to the communities. Encourage resident owned co-ops, outdoor gardens and produce markets, and businesses through grants and incentives.
How will you address public health concerns such as contaminated drinking water, rat infestation, and lead poisoning?
More testing and awareness of lead in water and older homes. Ensure rat poisoning is down, and possibly find other option for rat solutions as this is also a LARGE concern for the residents in my ward
How would you make Chicago a cleaner city with less waste and pollution?
I would like to encourage recycling and offer possible incentives for it. Having a recycling center near could really increase community participation. I can't tell you the last time I heard the word in this city besides elementary school when the teacher directed us to put paper in the blue bin beside her desk. However I don't recall seeing a can or truck anywhere near the school, EVER!
What would be your first steps for improving the transit system in terms of affordability, accessibility, and safety?
Discounts for low income riders. Make sure scheduled route times are posted, make bus stops are well lit and that bus lanes are there to ensure timely commutes.
