Kent Harrell is a judge for the District 5B Superior Court in North Carolina. He was elected in the general election on November 8, 2016.

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[1] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[2]

Harrell was a 2014 judicial candidate for the 5th Judicial District in North Carolina. He was defeated by just five votes in the general election.[3]

Harrell received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1992 and his J.D. from the North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1996.[4]

North Carolina held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on March 15, 2016.[5] Kent Harrell defeated Connie Jordan and Melinda H. Crouch in the Superior Court 2nd Division District 5B general election.[6]

Harrell ran for election to the 5th Judicial District.
General: He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 49.996 percent of the vote. He competed against Lindsey McKee Luther.Luther, following a recount, was found to have defeated Harrell by just five votes.[3][7] 

Judicial performance evaluation

In July 2014, the North Carolina Bar Association released the results of a survey in which it asked lawyers to rate the judicial candidates for the trial courts. The candidates were rated from one to five on five different criteria as well as on their overall performance.[8]
