Kent Sullivan was the Texas Commissioner of Insurance. He was appointed to the position by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on September 21, 2017, following the death of former officeholder David Mattax earlier that year.[1] He stepped down in September 2020 to return to the private sector.[2]

Prior to his time as an insurance commissioner, Sullivan served as a judge on the Texas Fourteenth District Court of Appeals. He was appointed to this position in November of 2008[3] and his term expired in 2010.[4]

Biography

Justice Sullivan was born in Louisville, Kentucky. After obtaining his law degree from the University of Virginia, Sullivan worked in private law practice in Houston for more than 20 years. He then served six years as a district judge in Harris County and as first assistant attorney general of Texas before his appointment to the Court of Appeals in 2008.[3] After leaving the Court of Appeals, Sullivan joined Jackson Walker as a partner, where he was still working at the time of his nomination as commissioner of insurance.[1]

Sullivan was appointed to fill the remainder of David Mattax's unexpired term as Texas Commissioner of Insurance by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on September 21, 2017.[1] He resigned in September 2020.[2]

Personal life

Sullivan is married and has one son.[3]
