Jurisdiction

This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]

​District Court is the court of limited jurisdiction and handles juvenile matters, city and county ordinances, misdemeanors, violations, traffic offenses, probate of wills, arraignments, felony probable cause hearings, small claims involving $2,500 or less, civil cases involving $5,000 or less, voluntary and involuntary mental commitments and cases relating to domestic violence and abuse. District judges serve four-year terms.[2]

The judges of the Kentucky District Courts are elected in nonpartisan elections. They serve four-year terms and must run for re-election if they wish to serve again.[3][4]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[3]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a resident of the represented district for at least two years; and
  • licensed to practice law for at least two years.

Primary election
