Kentucky Legislature agrees to budget in special session
June 1, 2010
FRANKFORT, Kentucky: On May 28th Kentucky legislature avoided a partial government shutdown by successfully passing a $17 billion, two-year budget plan in a special session. The session was called by Gov. Steve Beshear after the Legislature failed to pass a budget during its regular session.[1]
Described as "lean," the plan will see most state agencies cut by 3.5% in the first year and 4.5% in the second. According to Rep. Jimmie Lee, the budget includes no new taxes and limited borrowing.[2] The special session costs approximately $63,000 a day.
