Mission
The website for the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition lists the following mission statement:[2]
“ | It is the mission of the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition, Inc. to transform our commonwealth through 21st century solutions to problems and issues facing Kentuckians in education, economic development, health care, transportation and fiscal matters impacting the growth of our communities. The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition, Inc. seeks to bring about long-term positive change with fewer additional regulatory burdens and taxes.[3] | ” |
Background
The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition focuses on five key areas for public policy proposals: education, economic development, energy, healthcare and government efficiency. The group notes that they "oppose legislative or regulatory change that would seek to hinder Kentucky’s role as a key source of domestic energy" and that "Obamacare is a public policy disaster that must first be repealed."[4]
Along with Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, a Super PAC also run by Scott Jennings, the Opportunity Coalition was involved in the 2014 U.S. Senate race between Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) and Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes. According to an October 2014 report by the Center for Public Integrity, "No other group has had a larger footprint in Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race. In fact, the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition has aired about twice as many TV ads than the next most prolific player in the contest."[5] The Center's data shows that the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition spent $5.7 million on over 12,000 television ads during the campaign.[6] The Coalition also has strong ties to Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit organization started by Karl Rove. Crossroads and the Coalition have similar consultants and have the same mission statements.[7][8]
Finances
For the 2013 fiscal year, the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition reported $5,934,998 in total revenue and $1,242,999 in total expenses.[9]
